ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5 N1143 To: WG5 From: Miles Ellis Subject: Revision of DIS procedures The following information has been provided by the Chairman of SC22. As the proposed change to DIS procedures would have significantly impacted the timing for the Fortran 95 DIS, we must now consider exactly how best to proceed. Please be advised that the revised DIS procedures that we discussed at our plenary were not approved by the ISO/TMB and will NOT go into effect on 1 April 1996 as originally planned, per the attached message from the JTC1 Secretariat. It appears unlikely that we will know JTC1's intentions until the March 1996 JTC1 plenary at the earliest, and JTC1 will not be able to obtain ISO approval for any revisions until at least June 1996. I conclude that the current DIS procedures will likely remain in effect at least through the end of 1996. It will therefore NOT be necessary to identify "final CDs" since there is no such concept in the current Directives. We will keep you advised of any significant developments. Regards, Bob Follett ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 23 Oct 95 15:06:00 edt From: LISA RAJCHEL Subject: modified DIS procedure in JTC 1 Please be advised that at the September 1995 ISO/TMB (Technical Management Board) Meeting, the TMB DID NOT APPROVE the JTC 1 request for a modified DIS procedure (JTC 1 Kista resolution 13). The TMB expressed concern that the modified procedure might have an adverse effect on the possibility for public enquiry and openness in the development of International Standards. The TMB has invited JTC 1 to address these concerns and propose solutions to the TMB. The next opportunity for JTC 1 to address these concerns is at its March 1996 meeting in Sydney -- JTC 1 would then forward a response to the June 1996 TMB meeting. Given the above, the modified DIS procedure WILL NOT GO INTO EFFECT IN APRIL 1996.
