ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5-N1684 INCITS/ANSI FORTRAN COMMITTEE J3 US National Activity Report presented to the meeting of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5 (Fortran), London, UK, August 6 - 10, 2007 Since the February 2006 joint J3/WG5 meeting in Fairfax, VA, J3 has met five times in Las Vegas, NV, in May, August and November 2006, and February and May 2007. Most of the effort at each of these meetings was devoted to completion of the work plan outlined in J3 standing document 06-010r3, with most of the remaining effort devoted to interpretation processing. Most of the items on the work plan are completed. The remaining unresolved technical issues are summarized here: UTI Area Paper Summary 102 Interop Problems with undefinition of C_PTR and C_FUNPTR 112 Co-arrays 07-251 Image control statement problems with OPEN 117 Co-arrays 07-252 Error termination of an image 118 Co-arrays 07-253 Error termination of an image 119 Co-arrays 07-254 Collective subroutines "return" an array 120 Co-arrays 07-255 Initial values of co-arrays 121 Co-arrays 07-256 Meaning of VOLATILE for co-arrays 122 Exprs 07-263 Inconsistent rules on inquiry functions in specification expressions 123 Pointers Pointer association status and default initialization needs checking 124 Interop 07-124 Nonsense about actual argument declaration and addresses 125 Co-arrays 07-257 Incorrect statement in co-array description 126 Co-arrays 07-258 Missing semantics for allocatable co-arrays in C02 Issues 102, 122, 123 and 124 do not apply directly to any item in 06-010r2. Issue 102 is loosely related to co-arrays. All the remaining issues are related to co-arrays. Issue 123 requests to double-check some work the editor did without specific direction from a J3 meeting paper. This leaves issue 102 as the only serious issue not addressed by a paper for the present meeting. As measured by unresolved techical issues, every work item other than co-arrays (UK-001) is complete. Aleks Donev has reservations about macros (J3-014), but his objections as expressed in N1683 appear primarily to be that the design was not more ambitious.
