ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5-N1780 Japan's National Activity Report at the WG5 Las Vegas meeting in May 4-8, 2009 by TAKATA Masayuki IPSJ/ITSCJ/SC22/Fortran WG has 9 active members (6 from vendors and 4 from universities), and almost monthly meets face to face for 3 hours. The translation work of Fortran 2003, started in April, 2005, finished last year, but the final editing and indexing process needed more time than expected, and it will be published as JIS X 3001-1:2009. Japan supports UK's view stated in the National Activity Report N1777 that it is premature to proceed to the FCD stage while some features are still actively being developed. Having this situation, additional several months of delay in the development schedule for Fortran 2008 would be permissible, to ensure such features are well developed, and, at the same time, Fortran 2003 becomes widely implemented and used.
