ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5-N2060 BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTION COMMITTEE ON PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES (IST/5) UK National Activity Report presented to the meeting of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5(Fortran), London, UK on August 3 - 7, 2015 Membership and meetings The BSI Fortran Panel has gained one member and lost one during the year so that there are still 17 members, including observers. The panel conducts all its business by email. As last year, one member of the BSI Panel is also a member of J3 and one member is WG5 convenor (reappointed during the past year) and is an alternate member of J3. Of the 17 members, so far twelve have been registered in JTC1's Global Directory of Working Group members. Activity Since the last WG5 meeting the principal activity of members of the panel has been participation in the various ongoing discussions in WG5, particularly on development of the Additional Parallel Features TS. There was a discussion on whether the UK should propose restoration of I/O facilities to the TS. It was decided that it was too large a feature to re-introduce at this stage of development. There have been extensive discussions to develop the UK vote for the SC22 ballot on the TS. The panel has also proposed minor 'wart removals' for the revision of Fortran 2008, described in document WG5-N2059. Members of the panel advised a BBC producer on the content of a 15 minute radio programme on Fortran broadcast in April. This was the first of a series of five programmes, the others being on Cobol, Basic, Java and 'Tower of Babel'. At the time of writing the programmes are still available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05pmpf5. JTC1 and SC22 ballots The UK voted approval with comments in the ballot on PDTS 18508 (Additional Parallel Features in Fortran) and to confirm TS 29113:2012 (Further interoperability of Fortran with C) in the Systematic Review. Acknowledgements The BSI Fortran Panel gratefully acknowledges support from the British Computer Society Membership Board for providing facilities for the WG5 meeting free of charge, and for financial assistance towards members' attendance at standards meetings during 2014-2015. The panel is indebted to Peter Crouch for successfully negotiating with the Membership Board on behalf of the BSI panel. David Muxworthy BSI IST/5/-/5 (Fortran) Convenor July 20, 2015
